There are so many things that make Siargao a must visit destination: the soft sand, crystal clear water, solid waves, friendly locals – but another big thing that makes this island so well known is its food. There are so many cuisines to choose from in Siargao, thanks to all the visitors who were drawn to this island. But one cool thing about the food here in Siargao is that you may also have the opportunity to see where it came from.
Island Home Dream
When we lived in Siargao during the onset of the pandemic, we were lucky enough to discover yet another side of our favorite island: the agricultural side.

As people who want to one day have their own island home, it was really special for us to see these different farms that now have a special place in our heart. Visiting these farms was a cool and fun new way to explore the island and see how we can live off of it.

5 Farms in Siargao

Located in Barangay Suyangan, on La Januza island, Hardin ng Pagbabago is a farm that offers work for everyone in the local community. Upon arrival, you are greeted with a large sign made of recycled plastic bottles that says “I <3 Hardin”

The flourishing farm was teeming with upo, kalabasa, watermelons, tomatoes, kamote, and so much more. Martin was even tasked to harvest kalabasa for us. They even had a little hut that they use as a nursery for their baby seedlings to grow before placing them on the ground.
Watch here when Martin was tasked to harvest kalabasa for us!
The entire project has been putting the land into good use by helping the community find work and produce their own food. It was a dream walking through here. We want a place just like this in our island home so that we won’t need to buy everything and we can be self-sustaining. We aren’t the best gardeners but we are hoping that the green thumbs of our parents and grandparents are in our genes and we can become great gardeners and farmers like they are.
Our trip to Hardin ng Pagbabago was actually part of this really cool biking tour that we did , and we would definitely recommend it if you want to feel the sea breeze in your hair while peacefully exploring the island.

Bayatakan Farm is located in Barangay Baybay. This is where the locals usually get their produce. It has a very simple premise, you get everything you want and later weigh it when you are done to see how much you owe.
This is another great barangay project that doesn’t just let you buy fresh produce but helps out the local community too. In Bayatakan Farm, different families own pieces of land and if someone buys produce from their plot then a portion of the revenue goes to them. This is where we used to get our cooking ingredients back when we were living in Siargao during the pandemic.

It is always nice to see where your food comes from and how it is grown. This farm is almost 10 to 20 times bigger than the Hardin ng Pagbabago. There is such a great assortment of plants being grown here that they even have some things that are hard to find in a supermarket like blue ternate, or the edible blue flower. We were told that usually the locals come in bringing some fish, they harvest other ingredients from the farm, and then grill everything and eat together boodle fight style.
Martin discovered a new side to himself as he sought to harvest lettuce and kale for his salads while perfecting his Asian squat! He was also tempted to swim in their little lake. The water just seemed so crisp and inviting!
They even have some plants that you can buy, like parsley and basil, to bring home and start your own little farm. When you visit Bayatakan Farm, don’t forget to bring an ecobag for all that you harvest! You might also want to pack some mosquito repellant especially if mosquitoes love you just like how they love us.
The Fish Farm in Barangay Baybay

Another farm in Barangay Baybay, this fish farm was one of the stops that we visited on the Happiness secret tour. It’s a " secret tour” because the itinerary was kept as a secret from us so we spent the whole day in suspense and delight as we discovered the different locations we were brought to.
Watch this and explore with us
A local family owns, protects, and cleans this farm. Thanks to them, this farm had a lake with water so clear that you could see some fishes swimming around different spots. This place is very fresh and breezy with flowers and plants lining almost everywhere you go. The last time we were here, we had a great feast for lunch. We had a menu of delicious grilled fish and veggies, all of which were from the farm. We also ate these with freshly picked buko that was just overflowing with juice!
After our lunch here, we were taught how to make bamboo straws. We also took the time to explore a little bit and make friends with the local children who were all smiles. Since this is a fish farm, they even showed us how they catch the fish. The kuya who demoed was a real pro, catching the fish with his bare hands!

Tropical Academy is one of the many initiatives of the Lokal Lab in Siargao, one of leading organizations for sustainable businesses on the island. More than just a farm, Tropical Academy offers products like eco wash shampoo and conditioner bars, chili sauce, coco vinegar, wooden utensils, weaved products, and many more. Tropical Academy is located in Barangay Isidro.
They prepared lunch for us which included talong with coconut milk, sisig, and squash and kamote lumpia. We were also served a refreshing calamansi and blue flower drink. While we enjoyed our meal we were extra nourished by the fact that everything we were eating was grown just a few feet beside us.
Watch this and be inspired
There was an exciting energy and breeze in the air as we were also taught how to weave. It was hard work but thankfully the ates were kind and patient enough to help us through. After our weaving session, we took a tour around the farm. We learned that they use regenerative farming here which means that they grow their own plants that later become fertilizer for the fruiting plants.
Lokal Snackbar
Another great project of the Lokal Lab is its Lokal Snackbar. Lokal has launched many initiatives to promote and support the local farmers and craftspeople of Siargao. Lokal Snackbar is one of the many ways that they do this.
Lokal Snackbar can be found farther north in Burgos, away from General Luna and the big crowds. The place itself offers a retro vibe that leaves a unique and lasting impression. This snackbar isn’t exactly a farm, but the result of what they produce in the farm. Here you can taste the freshly grown ingredients created into delicious meals and snacks.
You can buy smoothies, coffee, teas, shakes, ulam wraps, ice cream, halo-halo, and even beer and cocktails. If you do come here, you should definitely try out their homemade coconut ice cream.
In line with its aim for sustainability, everything they use is eco-friendly. They use recycled materials and refrain from plastic.
